Color the Curb
Color the Curb is a joint agency project between DDOT, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH), and DC Public Schools (DCPS). Color the Curb is a subset of DDOT's Arts in the Right-of-Way (AROW) program, which supports designs that transform intersections into works of art to increase the safety and visibility of pedestrians while adding visual interest to the area.
Each year, the Color the Curb program identifies public elementary schools where curb extensions are installed and activates these spaces with student inspired murals. Competitively selected artists work closely with the school's faculty and students at the paired school to create a mural design. Color the Curb ground murals are meant to:
Elevate the importance of safe intersections for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists;
Celebrate the culture, spirit and/or history of the District; and
Create a public canvas that features the artwork of District artists.
