If you know Kady—and have seen the impact she makes on the communities she calls home and the people she calls neighbors—it’s probably not even a little bit surprising that someone once wrote a song for her. And this was pre-AI songs, mind you. An actual artist wrote an actual song for Kady.
It’s a fitting little detail for someone whose career has been built around the idea that people should have a meaningful role in shaping the places where they live.
Kady is a creative placemaking practitioner whose work sits at the intersection of public art, civic participation, community development, and public space. Her career has taken her from her hometown of Binghamton, New York, where she became the city’s youngest Commissioner for Downtown Development and helped establish its Department of Public Art, to Flint, Michigan, where she served as the city’s first Director of Placemaking and developed a “Pop-Up Civics” approach to giving residents tangible ways to participate in their city.
Today, Kady is Vice President of Placemaking and Activations at Downtown Vision in Jacksonville, Florida. There she leads PlacemakingJax, creating opportunities for artists, residents, businesses, and community organizations to bring their own ideas into downtown public spaces. Rather than treating community engagement as simply asking people what they think about someone else’s plan, the program helps give people the resources and opportunity to actually make things happen.
That thread runs throughout Kady’s work: expanding access to placemaking and giving more people agency over how they experience their communities. Temporary interventions, public art, events, pop-ups, and small experiments become tools not only for making a place more interesting, but for allowing people to see themselves as participants in its future.
It was such a pleasure to have Kady on Sidewalk Ballet—and it has been equally delightful to continue watching her work, both in Jacksonville and as a voice advancing the larger field of placemaking.
