When I was growing up, my Mom often told stories about skipping class and going to the ‘64 Worlds fair in Flushing Meadows. To hear her tell it, she was in Queens for most of her senior year of High school. Apparently Dad, who was one year older, was working in the Air Force as an MP (Military Police) and he was stationed there. Mom Lived in East Providence. Most of the stories are about who she could or couldn’t convinced to come with her, how she got in trouble or talked her way out of trouble and generally how much better an education she got at the Fair than had she stayed in school. Once in a while she would talk about things she say at the Fair, like the Video Phone (can you imagine?!?) and houses run on solar energy. It’s hard to know how regular of an occurrence it was for her to go. It was over a three hour bus ride, and I’m pretty sure tickets weren’t akin to lunch money. However many times she went, whether in real life or in her imagination, it gave her a life time of stories, and I inherited her love of the Worlds Fair
History can have a pretty big impact on the Future, can’t it?
