Chip
Chip is a placemaker, cultural producer, downtown leader, consultant, and host of The Sidewalk Ballet, whose work explores how culture, public life, and the people who shape places come together to make cities.
His route into city-making has been decidedly nontraditional. Beginning in theater and live production, he spent years producing cultural events and creating opportunities for artists and communities to gather. In 2004, he co-founded First Friday Santa Cruz, which grew from a small monthly arts event into one of the region’s largest recurring cultural gatherings.
That work eventually led into downtown and place management, including leadership roles with Downtown Santa Cruz and the Downtown Boulder Partnership, Block by Block, and later to BIG Creative Consulting, where he works with communities and organizations on placemaking, strategy, culture, engagement, and the complicated business of making places work better.
In 2025, Chip created The Sidewalk Ballet, an ongoing conversation about cities and the people who shape them. The project brings together many of the threads of his earlier work—public space, culture, downtowns, informal systems, governance, belonging, and the often-overlooked people and ideas that make city life possible.
He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and remains unusually interested in what happens when you put a bench in exactly the right place.
